New National Electrical Regulations for all new residential construction & remodels as of January 2010. Requires that all receptacles be child proof. They are recommended for residential or commercial settings such as children’s bedrooms and areas where children frequent.
It is important to protect children with tamper proof outlets all throughout your home, as outlets are tempting toys for unsuspecting children. Sticking fingers or foreign objects into sockets puts them at risk of being shocked or burned. Reduce this risk by installing child proof outlets in your home.
Another type of receptacle used in many homes is the GFCI receptacle, a variation of conventional outlets that are used in bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor areas where the possibility of shock is a serious hazard. These Receptacles are also available tamper proof. There are 4 types of safety devise for electrical outlets:
• outlet caps- young children can remove outlet caps
• offset cover plates- Spring-loaded offset cover plates block direct access to outlets. To insert a plug, twist 1/4 turn clockwise until the holes in the plate & the outlet line up.
• protective covers- Covers flip out of the way for insertion or removal of a plug.
• Tamper Resistant Receptacles- Leviton makes it easy for you to comply with the 2008 NEC mandate for TR Receptacles in all new residential housing.
